Visualizing Healthcare in the US
: Essential Facilities & Professionals – 2015
This project focused on creating hospital and medical staff icons with a clear visual language that ensures both intuitive communication and trust. The design reflects three key principles—consistency, inclusivity, and medical ethics—resulting in icons that are easy to understand and universally reliable.

The icons were designed to be clear and intuitive, allowing patients, medical staff, and visitors to quickly recognize them. Unnecessary details were minimized for clarity. For key hospital facilities like the emergency room, pharmacy, and consultation rooms, universally recognized medical symbols were used, refined with clean line art and minimal color for better readability.
To ensure versatility across web, mobile, and print, the icons were optimized for small sizes while maintaining sharpness. A balanced combination of line art and solid fill styles was used, with adjustments to preserve form and clarity at any scale.

The icons are designed with clean, intuitive line drawings for quick recognition. Instead of a silhouette style, a lined approach was used to enhance clarity and detail while representing diverse ethnicities for inclusivity. Each icon captures key hospital elements and medical professionals in a way that feels approachable and universally recognizable. The design also prioritizes trust and professionalism, ensuring that every element reflects the ethics and reliability essential in healthcare environments.

To reflect a trustworthy healthcare environment, the shapes and colors of the icons were carefully chosen. Maintaining a modern, organized design, curves and straight lines were harmoniously combined to convey both professionalism and warmth. White was used as the base color to create a sense of calm, while red was employed for emergency-related icons to ensure immediate recognition. Icons representing medical procedures, such as syringes or surgical tools, were designed with soft shapes to avoid an overly harsh impression. Cultural and regional differences were also considered, ensuring the healthcare symbols and icons would be universally understood across different regions.
