Treaty – 2014

This work explores the complex balance between historical national conflicts and personal relationships, specifically in the context of South Korea, China, and the United States. During the Korean War, these nations were adversaries, and the unresolved tensions from that conflict still affect relationships today. When individuals from these countries meet, their connection is often influenced by the weight of this shared history.

The piece, however, focuses on a more specific scenario: two individuals who, due to circumstances, are forced to live in a third country. In this context, they must navigate the challenge of setting aside national conflicts and building a personal connection. The work proposes a temporary 'treaty'—a symbolic agreement to put aside historical tensions and foster personal bonds. This treaty is intentionally short-term, requiring periodic renewal to ensure the relationship is nurtured and to prevent indifference from taking root.

Beyond merely avoiding conflict, the piece invites reflection on the nature of human relationships. It raises questions about how we can truly understand one another and communicate meaningfully, even when history weighs heavily upon us.
