Lenovo Go Ergonomic Mouse – 2019

As part of a project at d:e Creative Service, a collaboration with the Lenovo design team focused on expanding their desktop accessory lineup. This effort led to the development of a vertically oriented wireless mouse, designed to promote a natural handshake position and reduce wrist strain. The objective was to create an ergonomic solution that enhances comfort during extended use.

The Go Ergonomic Mouse and Keyboard received a 2022 Red Dot Design Award in the Product Design category.

The design process began with concept sketching, followed by the creation of numerous clay models informed by ergonomic data. The goal was to develop a form that was universally comfortable rather than overly tailored to specific hand sizes or grip styles. Among the most promising clay models, further refinement was carried out using foam, a material that allowed for precise articulation of surface details and part separation.

With a refined selection of foam models, the transition to CAD was made through 3D scanning. While the scanned data was not directly usable for manufacturing, it provided a valuable reference for digitally refining the shape to the necessary level of precision. Several iterations of 3D-printed prototypes were then produced to validate the design, ensuring the physical form aligned with ergonomic and aesthetic objectives.

Prototypes played a critical role in fine-tuning the design. Physical models allowed for continuous evaluation, leading to adjustments in proportions, button layout, and surface transitions. Early considerations for manufacturing and part-breakup strategies were also integrated into the development process, ensuring feasibility for production while maintaining design intent.

The final design supports an ergonomically neutral hand position, enhancing user comfort over extended use. Recycled injection-molded cork was incorporated to create a warm and inviting touch, while precise surface modeling ensures seamless transitions between soft organic curves and sharp, well-defined edges. The result is a balance of functionality and aesthetics, ensuring both usability and a sophisticated visual presence.
