Europa Project

Europa Project Lander_prototype 1

Year: 2008

Medium: Blueprint

Size: variable size

Europa is a satellite of Jupiter. It is the third planet that humans should live in the future. Europa project is the plan to send an artwork to Europa before human beings or something human made arrive. It's not meaning of sending picture or sculpture to the planet, but sending a device with only a function that can be sent. In the history, Art has been flourishing after resolving necessary issues to live for humans. If we send an artwork to the planet before humans arrive, what will happen in there when humans immigrate? How will this behavior affect our future in there?

I also intended to remind the viewer of the meaning and value of contemporary art. This project provokes a cynical underlying question:

‘Why should we do this?’

A Landing Gear for Europa Lander

Year: 2012

Medium: wood, rope, bolts and nuts

Size: 200 X 400 X 250cm

Another concept of the Europa Project is regarding beauty in shape. When I was a student of under graduate school, I had a question 'Why is Apollo 11th so beautiful?' Even though not considering beauty, the rocket is so beautiful. I still do not know why. This work also included the question. I tried to design the device only for safe landing and proper stability on Europa. In order to accomplish this, I had to think over fact that planet consists of ice and water, and looked up the reference for design regarding artificial satellites.

* I made a landing gear for a Europa lander. By making an actual size landing gear, I intended to allow the viewer to infer the whole size of a Europa Lander. In addition, making the actual device allowed me to find and correct some problems.

Europa Lander and the Ariane5 main subconstractors

Year: 2012

Medium: 2d computer graphic / illustrator

Size: variable size

The Europa Lander is set to launch from the “Arian5” rocket. The size of the lander was determined after examining the size of the loading dock on the rocket, so I was able to estimate th actua size of the Europa Lander.

Holy Communions

Year: 2011

Medium: 3d computer graphic / 3d studio Max

Size: variable size

My next work has moved beyond images, create new meanings, and asked questions derived from ideas such as theories of evolution or creation. Combining these elements requires a novel approach involving research and experimentation. This shows holy communions for christians in the future who will evolve to fish. Some people may say that it is sacrilege. However, I would like to mention that this notion just comes absolutely from misapprehension. What I like to say is not about ‘God’s love’, but is about ‘our love for God.’

In Europa, if we use today’s a holy communion which looks like a coin, it can be tore easily because it is so thin. Therefore, it would be very hard to use or even hand over it. I thought of a new design of Holy Communion that can be available underwater. The idea came from artificial feed for fish. Because this feeds which are in the form of sphere, they had some spaces among them; my main interest was to minimize the useless space.

Lee’s 2012 Version of Vertebrate Embryonic

Year: 2012

Medium: photo manipulation / Photoshop

Size: variable size

Evolved Christians might have frequently crossed the beliefboundary between the theories of evolution and creation or acted to make further gaps, but I think we can make many philosophical questions such as what is right for our environment, our body, our thinking, evidence, and beliefs? Most of all, what I intend to do is to imagine and observe how our world would change when the established order changes.

* Ernst Haeckel's embryo drawings and real-embryo photos were referenced in order to predict the embryos of future-humans. I should study deeper and constantly for more accuracy because this image was derived only from the appearance of embryos

St.Peter’s Basilica for Europa

Year: 2012

Medium: 2D graphic / illustrator

Size: variable size

A floor blueprint of St. Peter’s Basilica for humans in the future who will evolve to become fish. I imagined an underwater basilica because Europa will consist entirely of water. I considered the sphere to be a fundamental element of pressure under water. I referred to several blueprints of St. Peters Basilica including Bramante’s, Raphael’s and Michelangelo’s. The cross is the main image of their floor plans, but I planned the basilica based on the concept of the Trinity since humans’ bodies will have evolved in the future.

* Paul LetaRaulilly's 'The Vatican and saint peter's Basilica of Rome' and many data available in the internet were the excellent reference to design for Basilica in Europa.
